Audio essays incorporate more human senses than a regular piece of writing, giving your point more feeling and excitement than just simple words can illustrate. It’s like the difference between radio and television because you’re not just reading it your hearing it, and which makes a paper seem less like a paper and more of a conversation.

Audio essays don’t include summaries or quotes said by a person its actual words spoken by the person telling their point that helps prove the point you’re trying to make, this is what makes audio essays more like conversations because point are being made by the words of actual people. This makes it more interesting to people because it isn’t just a bunch of words. But there is a difference when you’re introducing people who you are using quotes from because unlike written essays audio essay you talk about the person who said the quote after the quote instead of before. When using sound bits of information it just has to relate to the subject of the paper or even if it’s not just as long as it improves the overall feeling people get when they hear it then you have used the correct sound bit because all it is suppose to do is hook the reader back into the essay and make your paper that more interesting and enjoyable. Sound bites are also great times to transition between points of your essay which is a great substitute to just using words like also.

So when using audio essays instead of just a regular essay you have more freedom with what you can do because audio essays give you more options that you have at your disposal . Things like sounds bits to help transition between points and using audio quotes to make your points seem more real because it’s the actual person talking so it is a lot harder to take their words out of content. Using these correctly make your audio essay a lot more interesting than just a regular essay because when you are speaking you have more room to convey things that you normally would not normally be able to correctly put down onto paper.

ASU is a university that has more than 70,000 students, and only 22 fraternity chapters with an average of around 60 people per chapter that makes it around 1 percent of the student population. But even though it’s such a small percent of the student body it by far it the most talked about part of ASU. But not all of the fraternities are the same; most support the idea of mindless drinking and partying with no rules other than listen to the older guys. Delta Tau Delta is a fraternity that is different from the rest. Delta Tau Delta is a fraternity that I am proud to be a part of.

Adam Graf the president of the ASU chapter : “We pride ourselves in our class, etiquette, and GPA.  Being a Delt isn’t like being a member of any other fraternity”.

Delta Tau Delta’s importance to ASU relies on its effect on its members. The members are the ones that make the difference at ASU, Delta Tau Delta is just a platform that its members build off of giving them the best base which is the fraternities ideology, and with the help of your fellow brothers Delta Tau Delta helps make ASU and the world better by producing more men that are gentlemen. Delta Tau Delta is partnered with an organization called JDRF or Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation that helps give money to that charity to help find a cure for juvenile diabetes. So that is another way Delta Tau Delta is helping change not just ASU but the world. Being a Delt every member promises to be a part of a program outside the fraternity, we have member in originations all across ASU from sports teams to clubs. We pride ourselves in being above and beyond students who are involved in programs at school and who also love to have fun but only as a reward for our achievements.  These are the many ways that Delta Tau Delta shows its importance to ASU because its members also are involved in the ASU community making us not just frat guys but a group of people who invest their “Time and Talents” to go above and beyond other fraternities and display what it means to be a Delt.

David Rees an active Delt at ASU: “Our importance to ASU comes from how we change young men from average to extraordinary. Our ideology and are beliefs are what makes us different. Being a Delt means being living as an example of something that is greater than you. You’re a part of something that has been around for more than 100 years and your goal in college is that whenever you graduate and leave, that your fraternity and your school is better than when you got there”

So Delta Tau Delta promotes change for the better, and that is our importance to ASU outside of its members but for the betterment of ASU as a school because ASU means as much to us as being a Delt, so we try to leave it better than we found it and that’s what separates us from the rest.

I am going to write about my fraternity Delta Tau Delta, a distinguished fraternity that promotes and produces gentlemen. That is its main impact on ASU because the way that it changes its members, Delta Tau Delta is a national fraternity with thousands of members worldwide. But its importance to ASU is that it is a club that creates not just members but brothers and those people carry that out on campus where it affects everyone. Delta Tau Delta’s importance to ASU is that it is a club on campus that changes people’s lives, and gives people something to be a part of. This gives people a purpose in college, not to just be a student but be a Delt which is an honor that very few know the feeling of. So the fact that is changes students at ASU directly is why Delta Tau Delta is important to ASU because without it so many students wouldn’t get the same experience at ASU that everyone should experience because it makes ASU so much better.

Then a quote from the academic chair to talk about how Delta Tau Delta promotes and enforces its members not to be just good Delts but good students in the classroom too which shows one side on how Delta Tau Delta is important to ASU because it promotes high caliber students which then become high caliber workers that influence not only ASU but the world we live in. For our second writing project some things I liked about it was how open the topic was for us to choose from anything topic we wanted from places to skateboard, watch the big game, or just have a nice cup of coffee, also I enjoyed going to all of my different cafés because not only had I not previously been to a couple of them but the fact that it was my homework made it a little more enjoyable. What I didn’t like about the assignment was that I was never really clear as too what we were suppose to talk about, like if we were suppose to describe our places with extreme detail or use the quotes we put into each place and talk about why their opinion or view is correct. So the challenge was to find a scope we were going to use to talk about our locations. I focused on how each individual places coffee tasted because when you’re talking about coffee taste is everything and everything is second in comparison. Things I learned about each place are that Arizona has some incredible coffee places the coffee lab was fantastic, it reminded me of coffee I had with my sister in San Francisco shortly before moving to Arizona. Starbucks is the same everywhere rarely does it fluctuate; the café biblioteca has good food but average coffee. But as convenient as it is makes it awesome. Terrance café was good as well but they all paled in comparison to the coffee lab that received a perfect score in my book and I will be returning their shortly. These are just some of the things that I liked and disliked about this second writing project.

Chapter 17 is a chapter about how to incorporate relevant information in papers to help you back up whatever you are arguing. You can use quotes in many different ways in my writing project I am talking about coffee shops at or around the ASU campus. So using quotes to contrast ideas or provide information that can be used as evidence to prove or back up your information, so your paper isn’t just a personal opinion paper but a valid essay with proof for each criteria of a coffee shop that I am discussing.  Also in the chapter that would be helpful tool to incorporate in my essay would be to “use amplification to expand the scope of a point” (Palmquist, 577). This will only work though if I use quotes only in places where it would make the biggest impact in my writing because “quotations dropped into a paragraph without an introduction-are confusing. Worse, paraphrases and summaries inserted without context can easily be mistaken for plagiarism” (Palmquist, 580). Chapter 18 discusses about how to make your paper more visually appealing to the readers using things like line spacing with good titles in large font, how to lay a page out, like where writing should be placed and where illustrations should be put to make the page be more interesting instead of sloppy. This relates to my essay because we are going use Illustrations to provide a visual of each coffee shop I will be talking about because if I am suppose to be rating coffee shops based on my criteria, isn’t as good as if I have a picture of the coffee shop to give a visual to the place and to what I am trying to talk about. Just as long as the illustrations used address what you are trying to talk about because if you’re talking about a place being dirty then a photo of the dirty floors or something for example would be a great illustration because it is like a quote but for the eyes to see. Also other things I can quote from are from articles like the ones in newspapers because they are usually full of solid information, and certain web sites contain a lot of information just knowing what is a good reference versus what would be consider as a poor reference or website to site your quote from. All of this inforamtion might seem obvious to some people but when writing an essay knowing and providing solid points of reference and making you're paper creative and interesting to read can make a big difference in how people might respond to what you are trying to say.

Yelp.com it’s a simple website where people can research almost anything they want an opinion on. Yelp is popular for its food and dining reviews, why because even though people won’t admit it sometimes, but people trust other people’s opinions. When constructing a review on anything you need criteria to judge and base everything off of Yelp’s criteria consists of service, taste, price, and location. Then once you get to see the list of criteria that make up a review almost anyone can post their opinion or their experience that they had at that particular place of business. Such as how good the food was which is a great criteria but people have a wide variety of palates so taste is more of a individual preference because if you have only been to panda express for Chinese food someone who has had authentic Chinese food would find that place disgusting because even though it might be good to eat, people compare food and if they have had something that was much better than the food will seem to be a lot worse. But in the restaurant world taste is everything, and a great taste review will definitely bring in more customers because other people think that it is good to eat. Probably the second most important factor was price because that attracts different crowds of people to you restaurant but it also can be the reason some won’t go to your restaurant. Price is also affected by the location because in areas of higher social economic status will be areas with more expensive restaurants and vise versa because in poorer areas usually contain cheaper restaurants because the only way a restaurant can survive is with consistent customer flow, so most restaurant owners open up shop in areas where they can cater to the type of people living in that particular area. Service is probably the least important to people when they are looking on Yelp but is probably the most criticized area from customers because people typically do not like to wait for their food for too long so any restaurant that might even have better food might have a lower service score because they take longer to cook their food, but also service can be what kind of employees the owner has because the service section of Yelp is filled with complains about waiters who were either rude to them or didn’t speak well enough English.     

Review

Ryan while you provided in vivid detail the entire episode and a solid amount of background information that gave me, someone who has never watched that show. An idea that helped me understand the episode and what you were exactly talking about and I agree on what make a good show is always ending in a cliff hanger. But that was in my opinion much of what you talked about, you explained why you liked the show but you did have a set criteria for why, you just said you enjoyed that episode, so my only argument I can say it that the theme of the show is an overplayed idea that every TV and movie director has already done, I’m not particular a big fan of zombie movies or shows because the idea of the show is mindless zombies which don’t exist and I do not like things that are about completely impossible situations. Because it makes it already fake to me, the graphics might be amazing, but it’s completely unrealistic. I enjoyed reading your summary but I just don’t like those kinds of shows, but maybe if you set more criteria about why it is so great then I might be more prompted to try to watch that show.

Ian you provided more background than was necessary but we have similar taste in TV shows. Since I completely understand everything you say since I have seen every episode your review was very fun and interesting to read, but even if I have never seen the show before you provided enough information for a random viewer to understand the show and you gave clear and precise reason for why you like the show but it would have been better if you focused on only one particular episode because from what I read you covered about three different episodes. The individual analysis of Jax and his unpredictable character was a great analysis because it put a face to the name of who you were talking about and you added a picture which was a nice touch. You talked a lot about the plot of the TV show which was good but maybe more of the plot of that episode would have been better, because you talked more about the show as a whole than that episode which you summarized in a few sentences. But overall you parameters were solid and you provided enough information to back up your opinion. So you’re writing was solid and I enjoyed reading it.

Son's of Anarchy

The Television show I recently watched was a show called Son’s of Anarchy. I watched last week’s episode called “Laying Pipe”. The show is about a biker gang called the Son’s of Anarchy, which is based on the true story of the biker gang in California called hell’s angels. The club sells illegal Irish weapons and occasionally mule’s drugs for certain gangs. Since I have already know a lot about this show my criteria for the episode was the overall plot of the episode, how the acting was in some of the emotional moments in the show, directing, and how well you stayed connected with the show such as did it retain my interest or did I want to fast forward through parts. The plot of the episode was them trying to stay alive in prison since a drug lord wanted them killed, this provided the feeling you get on the edge of your seat because you never know what is going to happen next. So I liked the plot and it kept my attention throughout the entire episode. The acting varied on the character, the main character Jacks is a great actor and makes me connect with how he is feeling but some of the other characters acting make me feel like “come on dude” which might be the actors fault but it also makes me think that’s how it was directed to be which in that case makes me think sometimes the directing is too overdramatic, which can make the show seem fake or unrealistic. The episode started with them entering prison, they were friends with the Mexicans inside the prison so they had to always be in groups because they had a beef with another gang that wanted them dead. Then they had to make a deal to be safe with the gang leader, but they had to be sent to isolation, so they got into a fight in the prison yard so they could be in isolation which is safer than staying in the open with all the other prisoners. Once they were in isolation they were told one of them had to be killed because in an earlier episode they murdered the gang leader’s daughter. So as the episode the tension was which one is going die and the anxiety made the episode sad but also incredibly interesting. Then when it was time Op who was one the main characters stood up to fight to the death and him being killed was the end of the episode which it a great episode but it was sad so it made me feel different emotions which is what makes it a great show.

Eng 101

My Track

The Space I chose was the track here at ASU. It’s a big gated area with a large section of bleachers on one side that stands high over the track. The track is a bright red with lots of white lines that form lanes and starting lines all over the track and circles around a large portion of bright green grass and a small part of white track that fills a portion of the circle for the jump events. It’s a large wide open space that when empty is a nice peaceful place that has a great view of the football stadium. While this provides a great visual picture of the track, there is a lot more there than you may have originally thought.

The coaches and the athletes who have spend countless hours working hard and competing on the track have a sense of “place attachment” (Vanclay), this was apparent all the times that I was there because both the player the coaches and even anyone else who ran there were dedicated people of all skills and abilities, you can see it on their face that they are driven and they each have their own individual means and motivation as to why they are on that track every day. This dedication indicates some sort of attachment to the track because they go there almost daily for some to run, showing that the track means something to them. But what is amazing about that simple red track is that it can have a separate identity for everyone, it has no limiting factors so anyone can make their own memories there. It can be the dream finally realized it can be the place where you finally lost that weight you wanted to lose. But it can be

sad too, it can be where you weren’t good enough to make team or where you got injured and had to quit competing. It’s like a blank board where you can fill in what you have done there which is what gives it a different identity to everyone.

At the track there is a sense of something familiar maybe my high school track because every outdoor track is shaped and made in pretty much the same way so every track is almost identical but every athlete would no right away if this was his or her track, because if you spend enough time on one particular track you will feel a certain level of comfort running on that track because everything is familiar to you because it’s the track you have spent so much time running on, creates a sense of familiarity . That familiarity with something is what makes you feel comfortable and it can give you confidence because use you are use to your track, and that feeling is the opposite when you go to a different track, because while you are familiar with what a track is and looks like, but you’re not as comfortable because it’s not your track. And people tend to like thing more, when they are comfortable and use to where they are because then everything is familiar and when everything is familiar there is less you have to focus on and worry about. Once you are familiar with the track you have a sense of place awareness because you understand and no exactly where everything is and being comfortable with every inch of the track knowing what lane is the fastest, where there is an imperfections are. Sense they have complete place awareness then that means they also have place familiarity of the track.

There is a sense of a great sense of commitment on the track, because they run and train on the same track almost every day, this time put in builds a commitment to that track because that’s where they put in their work, that track embodies everything that they have work for .Even people who don’t run on the track team but consistently run on the track still have a sense of place commitment because they all had their time when they had to put in their work which over time develops into a commitment with that track because it still hold all the memories that they created there. That track will forever hold any and all memories anyone is willing to create there and they have a commitment to that track because every time they step back out onto that track all of the memories they have made their will come rushing back and they will get the sensation of returning home and that feeling is truly why they have place commitment because human being look for things and places to connect to. Satisfaction comes from happiness or excitement and if you’re a runner the track on race day will create enough excitement to make you sick, and the satisfaction can be from lots of things from winning a race to symbolize all the hard work finally paying off to someone fighting to lose weight and maybe save their life, that too can create that place satisfaction because when you look at that track you can visualize all of the hard work you have done and all off the accomplishments you have achieved there. I can relate to this because I ran track all 4 years of high school and I have place commitment to my high school track because it’s the place where I’ve made a name for myself, where I have met some of my best friends and where I have some of my greatest memories, even though the track here is not the same place I ran in high school it still reminds me of my track and will always bring a smile to my face.

A track is simply just a bunch or rubber laid out in a circle that totals 400 meters around. It’s then sprayed a bright red then white lines are added on making up the 8 to 9 different lanes on a track and starting lines for each individual race. It may look simple and boring but there is so much more to it than just a place where people run. It can be the dream you’ve had sense running in high school it can be the place where you met your best friend or the love of your life. It’s a big wide open space that you can fill with whatever memories you want to create, like running college track and creating an attachment to that place because it was where you made a difference, or where you worked and achieved some life time goal you have for yourself, that’s the beauty of it because it can be everything to you or nothing to you at all, that’s why I chose the track because back home my track has so many memories for me, and I want to create that attachment to the track here as well.

 

The place is chose was the track here on campus, I choose the track because I love running and I was a runner in high school. The view point i selected was Vanclays and how we as humans have special connections with a place that generate different feelings and emotions. I started with a general description of my place then went into more details about how every track is identical but completely separate. My first paragraph was about place attachment so i talked about the people who go there every day and the coaches who work there and how they all were separate people but through that track were all connected, and that dedication to something creates a sense of attachment. My second paragraph talks about familiarity and how people connect with thing when something special occurs at that place or when you are familiar with it because it can remind you of something. My last paragraph talked about commitment to a place and how the multiple times I have been to the track I always see the same people, because running isn’t something people do like once a week or a year it’s a place for the hard workers for the people who will go everyday and work till they can’t go anymore, that’s dedication and commitment to getting better, stronger, or faster. Then my conclusion rapped up talking about how special that place is, and how something so ordinary can be so extraordinary.

I love you're first paragraph. I found it extremely detailed and interesting. You presented the space very well and it made me clearly imagine the space you were talking about. The first paragraph was really well written and made me love your perspective on your space. Then when you used your senses to greater visualizing the space based on what it looks like, what it smells like, and even how it sounds. Then towards the end when you talked about racial diversity and how the space was like a level playing field where people didn’t look at race or skin color but a fellow student that point, that was a great point to incorporate into your writing, but maybe you could of went into more detail about the racial equality because that in it itself could have been an entire paragraph in your rough draft. Another solid part of your paper was when you discussed why and how that space is special to you was a great ending, it provided a great detailed perspective and insight to why you selected the M.U. as your space because you wrote entirely from your own point of view which made it different and individual to you. Grading wise you met all of the requirements and your quote was awesome and completely relevant to the point you were trying to make. When you write your final draft try to tie the last 2 paragraphs to your main thesis or add it in your conclusion .Your essay was very good and I enjoyed reading your perspective.

To start off with your introduction it was written well and I enjoyed the little bit of humor you injected into your writing it makes reading it a lot easier, because it seems like you enjoyed writing it. Back to your introduction I enjoyed your examples of why people use the library because they are things we all need in college, but maybe you could include more detail about the library in the intro.  Your second paragraph had all of the detail and it was really intriguing how you presented your space with not just a visual of walking inside but the atmosphere and how it even smelled, made the library seem like an almost magical place. I also like how you incorporated your lens into the writing it was a great part in your essay for you to present your lens through which you are writing this essay, but you could of went into more detail about you lens and exactly your lens was contributing to the paragraph. I also liked how you talked about the rue=les of the library that everyone just understands, no signs, no direction required, because when you in the Hayden library everyone changes their etiquette and knows that the library is cut off from the outside and in here is where students come to get work accomplished and you discussed about it in great detail which was my favorite point in your paper. Your conclusion was strong and sounds and I think you hit all of the requirements with ease and I enjoyed reading your writing.

At the track there is a sense of something familiar maybe my high school track because every outdoor track is shaped and made in pretty much the same way so every track is almost identical but every athlete would no right away if this was his or her track, because if you spend enough time on one particular track you will feel a certain level of comfort running on that track because everything is familiar to you because it’s the track you have spent so much time running on, it’s like driving that same car everyday then changing to a different car you would immediately feel the difference because it not what you are use to driving. That familiarity with something is what makes you feel comfortable and it can give you confidence because use you are use to your track, and that feeling is the opposite when you go to a different track, because while you are familiar with what a track is and looks like, but you’re not as comfortable because it’s not your track.  And people do a lot better when they are comfortable and use to where they are because then everything is familiar and when everything is familiar there is less you have to focus on and worry about. Once you are familiar with the track you have a sense of place awareness because you understand and no exactly where everything is and being comfortable with every inch of the track knowing what lane is the fastest, where there is an imperfections are. Sense they have complete place awareness then that means they also have place familiarity of the track.

There is a sense of place commitment because they run and train on the same track almost every day and compete on it for their home meets, this time put in builds a commitment to that track because that’s where they put in their work, that track embodies everything that they have work for to get to this level and maybe the thing that will propel them onto the next level. Who don’t run on the track team anymore and graduated a long time ago still have a sense of place commitment because they all had their time when they had to put in their work and compete on which over time develops into a place commitment with that track because it still hold all the memories that they created there. That track will forever hold all the memories anyone is willing to create there and they have a commitment to that track because every time they step back out onto that track all of the memories they have made their will come rushing back and they will get the sensation of returning home and that feeling is truly why they have place commitment because human being look for things and places to connect to. Satisfaction comes from happiness or excitement and if you’re a runner the track on race day will create enough excitement to make you sick, and the satisfaction can be from lots of things from winning a race to symbolize all the hard work finally paying off to someone fighting to lose weight and maybe save their life, that too can create that place satisfaction because when you look at that track you can visualize all of the hard work you have done and all off the accomplishments you have achieved there. I can relate to this because I ran track all 4 years of high school and I have place commitment to my high school track because it’s the place where I’ve made a name for myself, where I have met some of my best friends and where I have some of my greatest memories, even though the track here is not the same place I ran in high school it still reminds me of my track and will always bring a smile to my face.

A track is simply just a bunch or rubber laid out in a circle that totals 400 meters around. It’s then sprayed a bright red then white lines are added on making up the 8 to 9 different lanes on a track and starting lines for each individual race. It may look simple and boring but there is so much more to it than just a place where people run. It can be the dream you’ve had sense running in high school it can be the place where you met your best friend or the love of your life. It’s a big wide open space that you can fill with whatever memories you want to create, like running college track and creating an attachment to that place because it was where you made a difference, or where you worked and achieved some life time goal you have for yourself, that’s the beauty of it because it can be everything to you or nothing to you at all, that’s why I chose the track because back home my track has so many memories for me, and I want to create that attachment to the track here as well.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

        

   

 

 

Readings Summary

Week 3 assignment

The Mesa Trail by Mary Austin is a very descriptive story that talks about a part of the desert called "The Mesa Trail". She describes the vast plane or what seems to be nothing but flat ground. But as she continues to talk I found out that there are flowers and plants that survive there. Then she starts talking about the wildlife that inhabit the trail, like the coyote for example who serve as the "Lord of the mesa"(Austin 96) patrolling in the night looking for its next victim. Or the Badger who digs in holes searching for its food, or the Hawk that wait for the little creatures to scurry out of their hole. She also talks about some people who live in the Mesa and the annual rodeo in April that brings people to a part of the mesa that usually is barren. In the beginning she talks about the barren land then progressively as she keeps going more things appear to occupy the area, so maybe it really isn’t as baron as she made it seem originally made it to be.

Polk Street by Frank Norris is a story about just one day on his street from morning to night. He starts by talking about the morning and the Laborers and the newsboys walking around getting to their jobs. Then a little later the streets would crowd with people getting breakfast and walking to work also the kids going to school. Then a little later the ladies from the great avenue made their appearance beautifully dressed. Later on towards dinner the street would grow quiet since everyone was enjoying supper, but as soon as supper time passed the stressed filled with nicely dressed people that were ready to have a good time, even a group of singers by the saloon singing music into the air. A little later the street would drop into silence since everyone had gone home, a little after the trolley stopped coming and the lights went dark, the only sound you might hear is the footsteps of a patrolling police officer of the quacks of a duck signaling that the street was finally asleep.

Frank Vanclay's Making Sense of Place is a paper about what exactly a place means. He describes a place as a "space imbued with memories"(Vanclay, 9). Anything from a landmark to a special spot to just home every special place is special because of the memories you have or the feeling the space gives you. From that spot where you had your first kiss to the place you grew up you will always have a connection with that place for forever. It’s that place you go to think, it’s that place that brings you back home. We strive to remodel our homes not so it looks better but so we can increase our connection to the house as not just being your house but being your home. Places can also have negative feelings maybe it was your grandmas favorite restaurant, or the chair your dad use to sit in places and things hold connections which we relate to not because we need to but because we want to.

Chapter 14 was the part of the book that dealt with plagiarism. Plagiarism is anything from copying someone entire body of work to forgetting to cite a source from which you received your information, it can also be taking words your friends told you to use and writing it down as if it was your own. When you write something it must be 100 percent your work unless your citing a source you use as back up information. Plagiarism can carry serious consequences so even if it’s for a stupid or pointless class, make sure you do your own work.

The benefits of looking at something through another lens or a different perspective are that you can step into someone else’s shoes and try to understand why people think what they think. If everyone tried to do this in the world, there would be less fighting if people just took the time to understand different people’s lenses because there is a reason why someone thinks what they do. Some drawbacks to looking at things from another perspective are that you are not incorporating your opinion in what you are writing so it can be mostly what you read or have seen which could all be incorrect or exaggerated information. I am still having trouble constructing a new lens the idea of thinking like someone else is easy but going into a new environment and thinking how someone else would think is hard to work around without incorporating some of my own opinion in there. Not using my opinion is what is most confusing in this section.
